Abstract

The prognostic value of nuclear DNA content was studied retrospectively using flow cytometry in 45 cases of HCC operated on at Department of Surgery, Inje University Paik Hospital, Seoul, from April 1980 to December 1992. The DNA distribution was
classified into two types, diploid and aneuploid. Flow cytometric measurement of tumor DNA content revealed a diploid pattern in 24 patients(53%) and aneuploid in 21 patients(47%). Nuclear DNA content provided significant correlationship only
with
the
presence of portal venous thrombi among a number of prognostic factors. There was no difference in survival between the diploid and the aneuploid groups. From these findings, it is concluded that tumor DNA content has no prognostic value in our
series
of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma.
